March 2024 Nuclear News Round-Up

nuclear

Welcome to the latest edition of the ARC Nuclear News Round-Up, where we dive into the latest developments in nuclear energy, policy, and technology. March has been a significant month for the nuclear sector, showcasing strides in legislative support, industry advancements, and international collaboration. Here's what's been happening:

US Budget Proposes Significant Support for Nuclear Projects

The US Administration has earmarked nearly $1.6 billion in the 2025 budget for the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy. This funding boost aims to secure supplies of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), develop new reactor technologies, support research and development (R&D), and advance the use of additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence. A significant portion of this budget will also go toward deploying US reactors overseas, marking a critical step towards decarbonizing the country and reinforcing its stance on clean energy innovation.

Amazon's Leap into Nuclear-Powered Data Centers

In a groundbreaking move, Amazon Web Services (AWS) acquired a 960-megawatt data center campus from Talen Energy for $650 million. Located in Pennsylvania and powered by the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, this acquisition underscores Amazon's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2025. This initiative not only represents a significant investment in clean, carbon-free energy but also highlights the role of nuclear power in supporting the growing demand for data centers worldwide.

The Atomic Energy Advancement Act: A Legislative Milestone

The Atomic Energy Advancement Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, setting a new precedent for the future of nuclear energy in the country. The Act streamlines the review process for advanced reactor license applicants and reduces associated fees, facilitating faster deployment of nuclear reactors. Sponsored by Representatives Diana DeGette and Jeff Duncan, the bill emphasizes modernizing nuclear regulations, extending the Price Anderson Act, and reinforcing the U.S.'s leadership in global nuclear energy. As the country moves towards decarbonization, this legislative effort is pivotal in ensuring a sustainable and secure energy future.
